The Slate speaks of a previous mission done by one of Inquisitor Skane’s cell on the planet of Modra in the Hazeroth Abyss, an industrialized world, mostly paying the tithe with manpower for the Guard. They came to investigate cases of sudden mutations appearing in the city of New Haven.
At first they discovered that local criminal elements may be involved, as the Planetary Governor has banned all legal alcohol usage, and all victims all consumed alcohol from an illegal bar. After investigation of Local Crimelords Din Michalo and Bronnan, and a farm located outside the New Haven city limits, the Acolytes discovered too late that this burst of mutations was not the act of a Cult or an unseen daemonic element, but was clever manipulating from Eldars.
The cell received reinforcements in the form of a recon platoon of the Imperial Guard (as a whole company of PDF troopers barracked near-by vanished without a trace nor gunshot) and went to disable a beacon which blocked astropathing communications. Despite heavy looses, they managed to disable the beacon and made their way to the Arbites fortress, being constantly harassed by Eldar skimmer-riding raiders.
With the help of the Arbites, they have managed to storm Din Michalo stronghold’s and put the blame on his shoulders and his organization. The brewmaster was later found hanged at his home.

The Adeptus Mechanicus have a secret research station in the Modra system, to study the effects of the nebulae which rotate around the sun on the same axis as the planet Modra, having the same effect on the tides than a moon would have. Their experimentations are currently trying to harness the reason for the planet’s reaction to the anomaly and to see if some sort of energy-collecting option could be possible.
The Eldars that attacked Modra appeared to be the sub-type dubbed ‘Dark Eldar’, more vicious, barbaric and sadistic that their more often uncounted brethrens. They rejoice in inflicting pain and suffering to all that lives, treating their torture as an art they enjoy practicing on slaves and prisoners.
Eldar raiders were never reported to act in this sub-sector before now. Pirate activity is considered medium-thread. Despite the Navy holding long range patrols in the sub-sector, no reports came out of any Eldar-pattern vessels being sighted in the years, months or weeks before the raid.
The Eldar beacon is currently being held and studied by the Planetary Governor‘s scientists. Despite being a Xeno object, the Governor seems to have been inspired by the Fenksworld’s example and is tyring to gather a Librarium of esoteric knowledge, despite protest from the Lord-Marshall of the Arbites and constant covert overwatch by the Inquisition. You are to locate the cog engine of the beacon and bring it back undamaged at any cost for further analysis.
The secondary objective of the mission is information gathering; where the xenos came from, their motivation, why was Modra attacked. Eldars are enigmatic and cowardly; they do not mount planetary assaults of any scale without a valid reason.
Discretion is also mandatory; Skane’s cell were less than subtle in their actions, bringing a lot of unwanted attention from the local media outlet, enforcers and criminal elements alike. The only attention that must be shed must be your own on the task ahead.
No doubt that local Enforcer agencies are currently investigating this as well; try not to get them involved. If you must, keep a low profile. Do make sure they are thrusting enough not to voice your true identity to their superiors if they ever come around to discovering it, or you informed them of your true position.
In the odd chance you manage to get a Xeno alive, interrogate him. If you are unsuccessful, bring him back for further questioning.
++++SHIP INFORMATION++++
The ship that shall be transporting you to Modra is the “Eternal Sunset” an Orion Class star-clipper. The Eternal Sunset came to the Calixis sector 124 years after the beginning of the Angevin Crusade, send in all haste to transport a group of xenographers and Ordo Xeno Inquisitors there to study and analyse new, dangerous Xeno races uncovered and conquered during the Crusade. It’s first Captain, a man named Froulise was a Rogue Trader who discovered a few worlds in the sub-sector now known as the Drusus Marches, before his dynasty came to an end 400 years later where, left without an heir, gave his command to his First officer, who after hard negotiations managed to downgrade the Warrant of Trade to an Heradity Free Charter.
The vessel has a reputation of being reliable with a good crew, if only with a rather fiery temperament of its warp engine. Its speed is remarkable for a transport vessel, and if its ancient wooden corridors could speak, a million stories could be told. As the Sector was forming, the Inquisition, rich nobles and even smugglers used the ship and crew to ferry their goods all across Calixis at a price.
Apart from its powerful engine, the Star-clipper also has a cargo hold, a munitorium, an arboretum, a Temple to the God-Emperor, barracks, a librarium vault, an empyrean mantle, medicae deck, observation dome and a teleportarium among other things.
The current Captain, Lord Captain Vouleur, is the 14th generational Lord Captain of the Eternal Sunset. Born on the ship, like most of the crew, he is well respected by his men and command respect from his peers (his charter greatly help his status). He is a trusted agent of the Inquisition, and while not sworn into the upmost secrecy (like an Acolyte) he still can be counted on to be trusted with sensitive information. Your judgement is to be used here.
The Eternal Sunset will transport you from Scintilla to Modra in the Hazeroth Abyss. Warp transport is estimated at 2 weeks real-time, 4-6 weeks in the Warp. They shall remain in orbit around Modra until they are contacted again for your departure.
Captain Vouleur and his crew are NOT to be used in the course of your mission. They are not acolytes, not are their qualified or competent for a planetary operation. Their skills and talents rest within void operations, which are currently not within mission parameters. You could be allowed to borrow Equipment from the ship's stores, but the final decision falls to Captain Vouleur
